It was only a year ago when 16-year-old Swedish activist and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, Greta Thunberg opened our eyes to the fact that ‘our house is on fire’.

Amazon rainforest fire, melting ice-sheets, water crises, warming oceans, shrinking biodiversity, are warning signs that the climate crisis needs to be treated like one to be resolved before it’s too late. Thunberg and activists around the world are urging everyone to go on strike from September 20-27, in order to demand urgent action to tackle the crisis by creating a fossil-fuel-free world and bring climate justice to everyone. These dates were chosen to bookend the UN Climate Action Summit on September 23.

This climate strike is the first global strike to involve such a vast demographic. While the global strikes before this were aimed primarily at school students, this time around they want everyone to join them. In a video by NGO Jhatkaa.org, which is co-organizing these protests, children are shown emphatically stating that ‘change is coming, whether you like it or not’.

More than 1,700 strikes are planned in 150 countries across the world. Climate strikes will work differently depending on where one is in the world. More than 10 cities and towns in India including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Jaipur, etc. In the national capital, the protest will be held today at the Arts Faculty, University of Delhi, Lodhi Gardens and at the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, whereas Mumbai and Kolkata will hold one part of the protest today and the other on the September 27.

The strike is aimed at telling the world leaders that they are “no longer willing to continue with business as usual.” This time, the war cry is 'Restore, Protect, Fund'.

A simultaneous digital strike is also being organised by putting up banners on their homepages and donating ad space to raise awareness. Social media is also extensively being used to add participation to the strike. There is also an option to start your own strike. More information can be found at https://globalclimatestrike.net/.
