A City Flooded

It was 2003 when Harpreet Dev's Fiat Padmini's gear got stuck and he first drove in the reverse. Today, 14 years later, the people of Bhatinda wave casually as they watch Harpreet whizz by, driving backwards, siren blazing (as a warning to those driving the right way around) with "Back gear Champian" emblazoned across his car. He has done thousands of kilometres so far, runs the Back Gear Driving Academy where he also teaches people to drive in reverse and has even been featured in Tennessee rock band JEFF The Brotherhood's music video, Punishment. This is called arriving -- backwards.

As far as excuses go, this one's much better than the old 'the dog ate my homework'. The Barwadda police department in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, recently told a court that rats ate 45 kg of marijuana, which was vital evidence in a massive drug haul. The narcotic, all 145 kg of it, had been stored in the police station store room. Meanwhile, rodents in Bihar were accused of drinking over 9,00,000 litres of seized alcohol in May this year. The matter is under investigation.

Who hasn't experienced a big fat Indian wedding complete with over-the-top themes? This Andhra Pradesh godman, from Tanuku in West Godavari district, decided to take it one step further for his daughter's wedding. The bride was dressed as goddess Lakshmi (and brought in on a lotus), the groom as Vishnu, with the parents as kings and queens complete with gold jewellery and crowns to match. Close family members, dressed as gods, completed the divine entourage.
