If you have been a bit out of touch with books, there’s really no better time to start.

From The Editor:From One Reader to Another

Before I fell in love with my husband, I fell in love with his books. When I first entered his room years ago, I immediately knew he would be my friend. Each wall in the room was lined with books—there were piles on every available space. Literature, art, history, science, philosophy—you could just get lost among them. Books received from loved ones, picked up at second-hand bookstalls, won as prizes—they were love, pure love.

There was a prop in one corner, where a sign hung: ‘Pregnancy Tests Done Here’. Someone had left it there, I learnt later. The young man, who lived there, barely noticed—immersed as he was, mostly, in reading.

Our home today is full of books, each of them precious, of tremendous sentimental value. Our son’s room is a more modern haven full of books and music. I wonder if some young lady will find her way into his heart through them.

Books bring us together, help us survive many odds and make us smarter. There’s no specific time to celebrate books and reading, so we chose this month. Read our stories ‘Why I Write’, ‘Working-Class Writers’ and a special ‘Me and My Shelf’ from Jeffrey Archer. Our cover story ‘Get Smarter about Your Brain’ tells us how to keep our brains sparkling. And do not miss the delightful read on Extraordinary Children.

In this strange, strife-ridden world, children—and books—hold out hope. If you have been a bit out of touch with books, there’s really no better time to start. Start small and build up your reading habit once again. You will be a happier person.

My best wishes to you all.
