Commonly eaten as a breakfast cereal in the form of oatmeal or rolled oats around the world, oats are slowly but surely gaining popularity in Indian kitchens for their many benefits.

According to a 2014 report on the consumption habits of Indians, oats account for a 26 per cent share in the Rs 720-crore breakfast cereal market.

They are wholegrain cereals, which means they have the bran, the endosperm, and the germ intact. This ensures they come packed with loads of fibre and nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, making oats super healthy.

This versatile grain can be used as a base for several delicious dishes, for breakfast as well as for the main course. Here’s why it’s liked by one and all.

The Health Factor

This food is a fabulous source of carbohydrates–a cup of cooked oatmeal can provide nearly 30 gms of good carbohydrates.

Low in fat, oats are also a great source of iron, magnesium and zinc. The plant chemicals found in oats act as antioxidants that can counter chronic inflammation related to diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Oats are rich in fibre, which aid digestion and check constipation.

Great For Skin

Oats don’t just make for a healthy breakfast, they are also great for your skin. Oats have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

The saponin present in oats acts as a natural face cleanser, gently removing excess oil from clogged pores.

Especially beneficial for dry and sensitive skin, a scrub made with oats works well as an exfoliator, nourishing the skin while removing dead skin. Whether you mix oats with raw milk and honey to make a homemade scrub or buy one from a store for quick rejuvenation, oats can do wonders to your skin.
